Welcome the Newcomers: Sofia Pizzoni

MINNEAPOLIS — The University of Minnesota tennis program adds Sofia Pizzoni to the 2022-23 squad next season in maroon and gold. Pizzoni, who comes from her native Italy, will be a newcomer to the “U” in the fall.

“We are thrilled to have Sofia join our program and expect her to arrive on campus this fall,” said the head coach Catrina Thompson.

Off the court, Pizzoni excelled academically throughout her high school career, earning top marks and an annual average of nine out of ten.

Pizzoni’s sporting successes began at a young age, both locally and internationally. She was semi-finalist of Italian U12 championships, winner of Italian team championship under 12, quarterfinals in Auret under 12. Also she was winner of Lemon Bowl U14, winner of Tennis Europe in Tirana U16, winner of Tennis Europe in Kenya (Nairobi) U18, as well as winners in doubles in Croatia (U18), Malta (U18) and Tirana (U18). Pizzoni shares why she chose the University of Minnesota, her dedication to tennis and more.

Gopher Sports: Why did you choose the University of Minnesota?
Sofia Pizzoni: I chose the University of Minnesota because it is one of the best universities in the United States and offers many opportunities both academically and athletically.

GS: What are you planning to major in and why?
SP: My major is Science, Mathematics and Engineering. I chose this course because I have always liked science subjects and this type of course offers many career opportunities.

GS: What drives your passion for the game of tennis?
SP: I’ve always had a passion for tennis since I was very young. I’ve dedicated part of my life to this sport and it means a lot to me. I’m glad I can express myself at this university.

GS: Who is your role model?
SP: My role model is Nadal. I admire his commitment, his drive, his fighting spirit and his mentality.

GS: What other hobbies do you have?
SP: I like listening to music, meeting friends and reading.

GS: What are you looking forward to most about moving to Minnesota?
SP: I expect to make lots of new friends, do well in school and enjoy the rest of the team. I hope to have a good time and find myself in a new place.
