The famous AirBnB home rental and booking platform has recognized long-term solo travel as one of the leading trends of 2022 the 5 cheapest travel destinations for digital nomads in the USA this year. Big cities like New York, Los Angeles and luxurious Vegas understandably didn’t make it.
The United States isn’t exactly known for being a hub for digital nomads, largely due to its strict visa requirements that keep most long-term travelers away, as well as the high cost of living compared to other budget destinations like Colombia or Brazil. For this reason, Finding value for money can be a challengeespecially in large metropolitan areas and tourist hotspots.
That doesn’t mean nomads living on a tighter budget can’t settle in the US – they just need to know where to look:

When defining the five cheapest travel destinations for nomads in the US, AirBnB considered the average nightly price only for popular destinations, where more than 1,000 long-term stays were recorded in the first quarter of the year. While “long stay” is not a fixed period, it generally refers to trips longer than a few weeks or even longer than a month.
With that in mind, the best cities in the states to live as a budget nomad are the following:
5. Angleton, Texas
Angleton is the incredibly affordable Texas destination within the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. A small town with fewer than 20,000 inhabitantss, it has AirBnBs at moderate prices $24.5 per nightfar lower than Houston’s stratospheric $151 and a much more relaxed vibe than the neighboring metropolis.
In the municipality, nomads have a total nine public parks nature walks, and when booking October stays, you can attend the Brazoria County Fair, Texas’ largest fair. Although it is off the main route, it’s not difficult to get to at all: Angleton is just 43 miles south of downtown Houston and 18 miles north of Freeport on the coast.
This makes it easy for young travelers to meet H-Town for a night and still enjoy all the perks of staying in one quaint, traditional Texan Location.
4. Lamberton, Minnesota
Lamberton is a small town in Minnesota, about a two-hour drive southeast of Minneapolis, with a population of around 800 and nestled in historic Redwood County. The area is famous for its wealth of natureWaterfalls, rivers and nature trails, something travelers are actively looking for after being locked in their homes for two years.
If you base yourself in Lamberton and at the same time explore the beautiful surroundings, you should expect to pay an additional fee $24.4 per night, just a dime cheaper than Angleton, Texas. on the bottom, Lamberton is much further from a big city than its Texas counterpart, although its remoteness makes it appealing to nature lovers.
Cultural activities include the Corn Carnival Day and other rural events.
3. Garretson, South Dakota
Another small town, Garretson has a population of 1,228 as of the 2020 census and owes its fame to its picturesque scenery Split Rock Park, one of the most visited in Minnehaha County. In fact, it’s only 23 miles northwest of Sioux Falls, the state’s largest urban center, making it a popular weekend getaway for locals.
Choosing to stay in Garretson rather than downtown Sioux Falls not only gives nomads much easier access to the city’s pristine outdoors, but also AirBnB rates, which are about 82.3% lower. Instead of a crippling $130 a night, budget-conscious nomads can find cozy rooms here for as little as $170.1 a week, or $24.3 per night.
If you’re a history buff, you might be interested to know that Garretson is associated with the legendary outlaw JesseJameswhere he escaped a group after robbing the First National Bank in Northfield.
2. Catlett, Virginia
You may have noticed a running theme here. Once again, a small town makes this list, taking second place as the second cheapest AirBnB destination for long-term travelers: Catlett, a historic city an hour’s drive from Washington DCand one of the hidden gems in the state of Virginia.
Catlett is home to a historic district full of sights from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including a neo-Gothic church built in 1872. In terms of accommodation, it’s no wonder this is the case popular with remote workers: it costs only $21.8 per nightor an average of $610 per month to live here as a nomad.
The city is particularly popular with culture seekers, having been listed on the National Register of Historical Places in 2008 for its pivotal role American Civil War.
1. Tulalip, Washington
The final winner, Tulalip (or Tulalip Bay), is an autonomous region of Washington state under the jurisdiction of the native Tulalip tribes. It offers visitors another natural escape and boasts a variety of forest reserves and lakes, as well as proximity to landmark Hat Island.
The average price per night in Tulalip is a record low of $16.9 per night, making it by far the cheapest long-term rental offer on AirBnB in the United States. In nearby Seattle, the average monthly fare would be a staggering $4,590, or 89% more expensive to book. Interestingly, despite rising prices, Seattle remains one of AirBnB’s most popular nomadic destinations.
Before booking a stay, visitors are encouraged to learn about the site’s history and its status as a protected autonomous community of Washington.
