Stefano Pioli claims Empoli is a tougher opponent for AC Milan than Chelsea

AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli claims Empoli will be a tougher opponent for them than Chelsea. The two teams meet on October 6th for the group game of the Champions League.

The Rossoneri lead the group with four points while the Blues are at the bottom with one point. Both teams are not doing well in their respective leagues, with Milan currently sitting fifth while Chelsea sit seventh.

And now the Milan boss has attacked his European rivals. In an interview published in Metro, Pioli opened up about his team’s two upcoming games.

“I don’t think it makes a big difference if you play well in Italy or in Europe. The Champions League may require a higher pace, but it’s not impossible. I understand that there are expectations in relation to the Chelsea games, but I maintain that the most difficult game for us will certainly be against Empoli.”

The reigning Italian champions will take on Empoli on October 1 and then travel to west London on October 6 to take on the Blues. Despite the contrasting starts to their European campaigns, Pioli will know the Blues are his toughest opponents in the group.

Chelsea lost their opening game 1-0 to Dinamo Zagreb, which was also Thomas Tuchel’s last game as Blues coach. The west London side then appointed Graham Potter as head coach and he led his side to a 1-1 draw against RB Salzburg in his first game as manager.

Potter has yet to manage the side in the Premier League, with the west London side having to postpone two of their league games following the tragic death of Her Majesty The Queen.

Chelsea and Milan have met twice on the European stage, with both games ending in a draw. Perhaps Pioli is afraid of becoming the first Milan manager to lose to the Blues and that’s why he makes such unjustified comments towards the club.
