Minister Effendy to preside over Azyumardi Azra funeral ceremony


If there is no change, Mr. Muhadjir Effendy will preside over the funeral service

Jakarta (ANTARA) –
Muhadjir Effendy, Coordinating Minister of Human Development and Cultural Affairs, will lead the funeral service for the late Indonesian Muslim scholar Azyumardi Azra at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta on Tuesday.

“If there is no change, Mr. Muhadjir Effendy will preside over the memorial service,” Indonesian Press Council Deputy Head M Agung Dharmajaya said Monday here at the Press Council building.

He noted that Azra’s coffin is expected to arrive at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport before 10 p.m. local time (UTC +7) on Monday evening. After completing the formalities, the coffin will be transported to Syarif Hidayatullah Islamic State University (UIN), where he served as the university’s rector.

“This is the latest information. If the arrival time or transportation from the airport to the funeral home or cemetery changes, we will let you know,” Dharmajaya said.

Meanwhile, the deputy head of the Press Council remembered Azra as a polite and humble person who managed to maintain her humility despite being well known around the world.

He pointed out that Azra had received the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire from the United Kingdom in 2010 and the title of Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star from the Emperor of Japan in 2017.

Dharmajaya said Azra’s actions and humility sometimes made him and other members of the press council feel ashamed.

He added that Azra has never asked for excessive facilities while serving as press council chief and traveling on business. Azra also never requested a seat in business class and always asked to fly economy.

Azra died on Sunday (September 18) at 12:30 p.m. local time (UTC +8) at Serdang Hospital in Selangor, Malaysia. Azra died after being hospitalized for health reasons shortly after landing in Malaysia on Friday (September 16) to attend a conference hosted by the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM).
