10. Fiorentina vs Juventus
The enmity between Fiorentina and Juventus is probably one of the few Italian rivalries that stems mainly from events happening on the pitch. Despite this, it is one of the best derbies in Italy.

Fiorentina believed they had fallen victim to various dubious refereeing decisions in the latter parts of the 1981–82 season, most notably in a crucial game against Juventus. These incidents and the subsequent sale of Fiorentina star Roberto Baggio to Juventus added to the animosity.
Previously both clubs enjoyed similar success but Juventus have since gained the upper hand in the rivalry. While Fiorentina supporters see this as grudge play, Juventus supporters have fueled even more anger by stating that their previous rivalry games are more important.

The “mole” in this name alludes more to the Mole Antonelliana, a famous landmark in Turin, than to the animal. It pits Torino’s two biggest clubs, Torino and Juventus, against each other for local bragging rights.

The rivalry arose from a struggle after Juventus’ first president Alfred was kicked out of his club, leading to the formation of Torino. Despite Juventus being the larger team at national and international level, Torino have more local support. They are the biggest Juventus derby rivals.
6. Hellas Verano vs. Chievo Verona
Also known as the Verona Derby, this match features Hellas Verano versus Chievo Verona. The derby’s rarity lends venom to the times the two clash. They have only played each other 18 times, with Chievo winning seven and Hellas six. The name derives from the aristocratic Scaligeri family that ruled Verona throughout the Middle Ages.

5. Naples vs Roma
The Derby del Sole had its historical peak in the 1970s and 1980s when players like Diego Maradona competed against each other. However, cultural clashes between Naples fans in the south and Roma fans in the capital have resulted in riots and fanatics being banned from traveling with their respective teams.

While such behavior doesn’t necessarily reflect all Napoli and Roma fans, it shows how awful things can get between two groups of fans. Still, it’s one of the Italian Serie A derbies to watch. Roma is a bitter rival in the Napoli derby.
4. Sampdoria against Genoa
In its current form, the Genoa-Sampdoria derby is the result of the merger of two small teams, Andrea Doria and Sampier, into Sampdoria.
Genoa was the dominant club in the region, but Mussolini’s government despised the club’s British heritage and sought to establish a significant rival. As a result, Sampdoria was formed after several failed attempts to unite clubs.

The derby became much more even by this point, with the newly merged Sampdoria winning several games. After both teams performed well in Serie A in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the derby gained national prominence.
3. Lazio vs Roma
The Rome derby is perhaps the most passionate of the bunch. Ever since they first met in 1929, Lazio and Roma have had an ongoing rivalry. During the encounters between the teams, there were numerous confrontations and violent situations, but Roma prevailed in football, winning 70 of the 185 matches.

2. Inter Milan vs Juventus
Italy is split between Juventus and Inter Milan twice a year. They were the two teams that dominated Italy’s first national league and first met in 1909. Since then, battles between the two clubs have been bitter with Italy’s most significant historical fan bases.

The Derby d’Italia matches have always been highly competitive, pitting two of Seria A’s strongest teams against each other. However, today there is one of the most exciting football derbies.
1. Inter Milan vs AC Milan
AC Milan and Inter Milan know what it means to be rivals. Named after a statue of Mary in Milan Cathedral, this derby pits the city’s two titans against one another. This derby has it all: two highly successful teams, both Champions League champions, two different mentalities, a common stadium and a lot of hate.

Inter Milan’s founders parted ways with the club over a disagreement over welcoming foreign players, and that’s how it started. After the split of the two sides, Inter Milan was seen as a bourgeoisie’s club, AC Milan as a working-class team.
Both clubs have moved back and forth in terms of success. Inter Milan were more successful in the 1960s, but AC Milan dominated in the 1980s and 1990s.
