Kane sinks Fulham to become Spurs’ joint record scorer

London (AFP) – Harry Kane scored the club’s 266th goal in a vital 1-0 win against Fulham on Monday, aligning with Jimmy Greaves as Tottenham’s record.

England captain Kane hit a clinical shot at halftime from the edge of the penalty area at Craven Cottage.

Greaves’ Tottenham record has stood since 1970, but Kane’s first goal in his last three games gave him a share of the historic milestone.

“I was trying to get into a position where I could play for half yards. I used the defender to twist around him. It was a nice goal,” Kane said.

“I’ve been playing football long enough now to know where the goal is. It’s just instinctive.”

Kane could break Greaves’ record in Tottenham’s next match in the FA Cup fourth round at second-tier Preston on Saturday.

It’s only a matter of time before Kane becomes sole holder of Tottenham’s holiest record.

This remarkable feat seemed impossible as he got off to a rough start in his career where he had several failed loan spells before finally emerging as a star.

Greaves, who died in 2021 at the age of 81, is considered one of the most natural goalscorers in football history.

A member of England’s 1966 World Cup winning squad and scoring 44 goals for his country, Greaves is England’s top scorer in all-flying history with 357 goals.

For Kane, being with such a legendary player is a tribute to his predatory instincts and tenacity.

The 29-year-old is one step away from becoming the third player to score 200 Premier League goals after Alan Shearer (260) and Wayne Rooney (208).

Kane is on par with England’s shared record, Rooney, after scoring his 53rd international goal in a World Cup quarter-final loss against France in December.

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte said: “We talk about Harry Kane as a special player and a special person.

“The important thing is to have a good man because when you face difficulties, Kane will help you overcome a difficult situation.”

With Kane’s 18th goal in all competitions this season, fifth-placed Tottenham narrowed the gap to fourth-placed Manchester United by three.

Back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and Arsenal were a much-needed result after Tottenham damaged their bid to enter the Champions League top four next season.

Conte’s team had conceded 21 goals in the previous 10 league games.

Therefore, while Kane was rightly in the limelight, Conte was equally pleased with the defensive resilience of his players.

“It was a big win. I got a good response from my players. I asked them for the strength of last season and the will and desire to fight and be resilient,” said Conte.

Fulham should have taken the lead when Pereira made a cross to Harrison Reed, who was volleying eight yards from Lloris.

As Tottenham struggled to contain Fulham’s offensive wave, Aleksandar Mitrovic’s midfield header from Kenny Tete flashed brightly.

Fulham winger Willian came close to breaking out of the stalemate with a hard hit from Lloris just before halftime.

Not being able to score the pressure was fatal for Fulham and Kane broke into the record books in the first half stoppage time.

Spinning at the edge of the Fulham area, Kane worked a one-yard gap before hitting a spectacular shot past Bernd Leno.

The record-equal goal was greeted with sardonic “one season wonder” chants, recalling the skeptical reaction of Tottenham fans to his first productive season at the club.

Kane held the almost full record in the second half, but Leno knocked out a close-range header.
