Chelsea’s contract talks with midfielder Jorginho have reportedly stalled – the Italian star is said to be seeking a pay rise to take his salary to £150,000 a week.
Jorginho is one of three Chelsea central players whose contracts expire next summer, along with fellow midfielder N’Golo Kante and veteran centre-back Thiago Silva.
And while the Blues have started negotiations to retain the 30-year-old beyond the current season, Jorginho is yet to reach an agreement on his contract demands, according to the Evening Standard.
Chelsea midfielder Jorginho is reportedly demanding £150,000 a week to stay at the club
The Italian and team-mate N’Golo Kante are two players whose contracts expire next summer
Jorginho is thought to be making around £120,000 a week at Stamford Bridge and the reported raise request would see him match the amount made by team-mate Cesar Azpilicueta.
The player would prefer to remain in west London, the report adds, despite wanting to be seen as a key member of Graham Potter’s squad.
Chelsea owner Todd Boehly will oversee talks with Jorginho and is trying to keep a solid squad so his new boss can compete for the highest honours.
The same report on Jorginho also claims that Kante’s discussions have also stalled.
Jorginho is said to prioritize a new deal with Chelsea – but he has been linked with Barcelona
The France midfielder is said to be aiming for a longer contract than the two-year deal he was offered by the Blues.
Jorginho’s agent has already spoken about his future, admitting his client is “priority” to a new deal with Chelsea – but hinted he has also been in talks with Barcelona about a potential move.
“I work in football, I’ve been to Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia but also other parts like Lyon,” Santos told TuttoMercatoWeb when asked about his trip to Spain.
Pressed to speak about Jorginho with Barcelona, Santos said: “I’m Jorginho’s agent, I might have spoken about him but also about others.
The 30-year-old wants to be seen as a key player under new boss Graham Potter (L).
“We are prioritizing Chelsea and moving towards that. Another priority for Jorginho is to do well with the national team.’
Jorginho – who is vice-captain at Chelsea – has enjoyed incredible success since joining the club from Napoli in 2018.
He has won the Champions League, Europa League, Club World Cup and European Super Cup in his four years at Stamford Bridge – and also won Euro 2020 with Italy to add to his collection of accolades.
