Jokowi keen to open new Indonesia-Vietnam flight route

We must immediately restore the flow of goods and tourist traffic to the pre-pandemic period

Bogor, W Java (ANTARA) – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has expressed enthusiasm about a new flight route being opened between Indonesia and Vietnam as well as revitalizing the previously opened route.

“Direct flight routes between the business and tourism centers of the two countries must be revitalized. Airlines from the two countries are expected to finalize plans for new flight routes from Da Nang to Denpasar and Ho Chi Minh -Jakarta as well as the addition of the Jakarta – Ho Chi Minh City flight route,” President Jokowi said at the Bogor Presidential Palace, Thursday.

President Jokowi made the statement at a press conference with the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Nguyễn Xuân Phúc. President Phúc is on a state visit to Indonesia on December 21-23, 2022.

“We must immediately restore the flow of goods and tourist traffic to the pre-pandemic period,” President Jokowi noted.

During the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was agreed upon on cooperation in energy and mineral resources, cooperation in the fight against terrorism, and cooperation in expanding the illegal trade in narcotics.

“I hope that cooperation in fisheries and the elimination of illegal fishing will be strengthened by speeding up the finalization of the MoU on maritime and fisheries cooperation,” said President Jokowi.

The two leaders also discussed various regional issues.

“The priority for Indonesia’s ASEAN Chair for 2023 is to emphasize ASEAN’s central role in maintaining regional stability and peace and ASEAN’s central role in making Southeast Asia a center of economic growth,” said the President Jokowi noted.

The president praised Vietnam’s support for Indonesia’s chairmanship of ASEAN.

President Phúc, in his statement, said that Vietnam fully supports the theme of the presidency of Indonesia in ASEAN in 2023 of “ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth”.

“Next year, we will hold our 10-year strategic partnership, and there are two things that are the direction of this cooperation, namely, to increase the exchange of high-level delegations of the two countries and our agreement to to implement and implement the ASEAN Strategic Partnership Program in 2024 – 2028,” said President Phúc.

President Phúc said that Indonesia and Vietnam have agreed to reach a trade target worth US$15 billion by 2028.

“We need to diversify the areas of investment for the economic communities of the two countries, including in terms of the green economy, green transformation and renewable energy,” said President Phúc.

In the field of security and defense, President Phúc called for further cooperation in the region, including in regional forums.

“Regarding the South China Sea, Vietnam congratulates Indonesia on Indonesia’s success in the G20 presidency. Vietnam fully supports Indonesia in the ASEAN Chair in 2023,” President Phúc said.
