Ahead of the automaker announcing a new Gigafactory location by the end of this year, a European country is urging the U.S. manufacturer to consider it in its future efforts.
Italy’s Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, said that the country will “open [its] “The door is open for Tesla and CEO Elon Musk,” said a webinar organized by the Italian store chain. During an online event, Salvini noted that Italy’s car industry is in decline, adding that the country wants to attract foreign investment and capital.

Salvini also briefly touched on the regulatory process for building Tesla’s Berlin-Brandenburg Gigafactory in Germany, a system that CEO Elon Musk has criticized as taking too long. Salvini believes bringing production to Italy could be an easier and more supportive process for U.S. automakers.
“When I was in Viminale, I wanted to travel in an Italian car, not a German car, because there is no more car manufacturing in Italy. So inviting Elon Musk to invest in Italy and open in Italy is one of the ambitious goals we set for ourselves. He has problems landing in Germany. I know and we are opening our doors to him,” added Salvini.
Historically, Italy has been home to luxury car manufacturers such as Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati. However, none of the companies’ first EVs are scheduled to go on sale before 2023. By comparison, Tesla offers four electric vehicles, and the company currently dominates the electric car industry. Tesla opened its first European factory in Giga Berlin earlier this year, but the location has already begun expansion plans.
Interestingly, the casting machines for Tesla cars are produced by an Italian company called IDRA, which recently built a machine for the production of the Cybertruck. At least one element of the U.S. automaker’s production is already located in the country, as the Giga Press machines play a key role in the production of Tesla’s single die-cast cars.
Tesla recently opened its Supercharger network in Italy to non-Tesla vehicles as part of a pilot program to bring other brands into its charging network. According to a White House memo leaked earlier this year, the feature is expected to be available in the US by the end of the year.
