Indonesia’s Smartphone Market Declined 10% YoY in 2Q22, IDC Reports

JAKARTA-September 19, 2022 — Indonesia’s smartphone market had a disappointing quarter in Q2’22 as it declined 10% YoY despite growing 6.9% QoQ to 9.5%, according to International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide million units totaled Quarterly Cell Phone Tracker. Overall, the first half of 2022 (1H22) ended 13.7% lower compared to 1H21 but 3.7% higher than 1H19. Both suppliers and consumers prepared for the seasonal Ramadan period but faced a slowdown in consumer demand.

“In Q2 22, the government lifted COVID-19 restrictions that allowed people to return to their hometowns for the first time in two years. As travel costs increased, people spent less on electronics/gadgets compared to last year. Consumer spending also shifted to other areas, such as food and transportation, as people returned to their normal activities. Rising commodity prices also increased pressure on disposable income, forcing people to prioritize spending on basic needs,” said Vanessa Aurelia, Associate Market Analyst at IDC Indonesia.

The market is expected to remain subdued in 2H22 as macro factors such as inflation, exchange rate movements, rate hikes and rising fuel prices continue to erode consumer spending. With that, IDC expects total smartphone shipments to decline in 2022.
