Igali’s World Wrestling body election excites Diri — Sport — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

Bayelsa State Governor Senator Douye Diri has expressed his delight at the recent election of state youth and sports development commissioner Daniel Igali to the United World Wrestling Bureau.

The governor, who was out of the country, spoke shortly after the weekly health and fitness exercise titled “Prosperity Walk” at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa on Thursday morning.

In a statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, the governor was quoted as saying that Igali’s victory as the first black man to be elected to the global wrestling body has put Bayelsa back in a prominent place on the sport’s world map.

Diri described Igali, who is also President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), as a dedicated professional whose sense of duty has paid off and urged others to emulate him.

He said the state will always support Bayelsans who strive for excellence in various professions.

He noted that the state was proud of Igali’s achievements, particularly in wrestling, and wished him well in his role as a member of the Apex Wrestling Board.

Diri also commended St. Jude’s Girls School and their male counterparts from Bishop Dimieri Gymnasium for their performance at the ongoing World Schools Basketball Championship in Belgrade, Serbia.

The governor, who announced he was in contact with the national teams representing Nigeria at the tournament, said he was delighted with both sides’ wins against Hungary and Turkey in their first group matches.

Noting that with Bayelsa’s performance in sport, the state now occupies an enviable place in Nigerian sport, he expressed optimism that the state will continue to gain more ground in sporting events.

“I am happy to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the sports-loving men and women of the State of Bayelsa. Our state now occupies an enviable place in the sport of the country.

“I have been in contact with our basketball teams in Serbia and they are fine. The miracle keeps happening and it will never stop. Our prayers are with them until they come back victorious.

“Last week we had our own commissioner of sport representing us at the world federation for wrestling and he became the only black person to return to the world federation. I keep preaching that. Be committed to your work, and with government support, you will do a good job. We are sure that the state will come up with more victories.

In Nigeria, every time I travel, they ask me what the magic is in Bayelsa and I say we always trust in God,” he said.
