Huge blow to Eilish McColgan! British runner’s feat struck off after Great Scottish Run course found short

Eilish McColgan’s British 10,000m record in the Great Scottish Run was short-lived as the British runner’s achievement was removed. This came after Great Scottish Run officials discovered that the distance she had run was actually 150m short. As a result, the 31-year-old athlete’s performance is now null and void after a human error.

“We are extremely disappointed”

Paul Foster of the Great Run Company explained: “We were recently made aware of a discrepancy with the 10km course at this year’s Great Scottish Run, in line with previously agreed plans. This error had a minor impact on the half marathon, but it was within tolerance and the day’s distance was valid. We are very disappointed that this happened at the 10K, which has been an incredibly positive return to the city for the Great Scottish Run in the wake of the pandemic.”

Paul further claimed: “We have reached out to Eilish to explain and apologize. We will review our internal processes to ensure we cannot make this mistake again. There are no excuses for that.”

It should be noted that this is not the first time the Great Scottish Run has had to break a record. A similar incident happened back in 2016 when officials failed to adequately mark their half marathon course. Coincidentally, they went under 150m even then. Scotsman Callum Hawkins was on the receiving end and his record was removed after clocking 60 minutes and 22 seconds.

McCologan’s reaction to the latest development is pending. After winning the race earlier this month, she tweeted, saying: “I’ve been running towards my holiday like I’ve been back to Scotland this weekend. It was the perfect way to cap off an incredible 2022! I haven’t had a chance to see in years! A quick trip, but the best yet.”
