What does England say?

Jude Bellingham’s midfield partner Declan Rice said his Champions League teammate in his youth showed the world his talent.

“It develops on the main stage. It makes me happy to see that,” Rice said. When you have such a very strong and athletic player and creating the chances he creates. He’s done it all season at Dortmund and now he’s doing it for us.

Rice hopes England gets credit for their authoritarian win over Senegal. I think if you look at other teams like the Netherlands and Argentina, they win their games easily and are referred to as masterclasses.

“With us, it is always chosen. Negative things always come like this. If you look at the last few games, it was flawless. I think countries should start to fear us, as I said the other day, because we are a great team.”

What does France say?

France captain Hugo Lloris praised Gareth Southgate’s England team as a truly “great” generation of talent that thrives in every major tournament.

Ahead of Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final between England and France, Lloris also warned it would be “a big challenge” after watching the Southgate team’s development during his ten years in English football at Tottenham Hotspur.

Lloris has been training daily with England captain Harry Kane, and following England’s impressively comfortable progress past Senegal in the last 16 just after France’s 3-1 win over Poland, it’s clear that this is England’s best ever for the defending champions. He knows it will be the toughest test.

France won the World Cup in 2018 when England were eliminated in the semi-finals, but despite the genius of Kylian Mbappe, there is a strong argument that England have made more progress in their squad over the past four years.

“It’s going to be a big war,” Lloris said. “England have a great generation of players and you can see the progress in every tournament.” Lloris became France’s all-time top scorer in the win against Poland, while Olivier Giroud overhauled Thierry Henry as the country’s all-time record goalscorer.

It is a measure that this generation of French players is on the verge of leaving the team made up of Henry, Zinedine Zidane and current coach Didier Deschamps as the best in the country. Pre-tournament injuries to N’golo Kante, Paul Pogba and Karim Benzema also mean they’re a relatively young French team – 18 of the 25 players are 27 or younger – and it’s this mix that gives Deschamps confidence.

“It’s not the same thing, but as you can see the group is really strong,” said defender Jules Kounde. “Obviously they [Kante, Pogba and Benzema] They are important players, but we really trusted the other players who came to replace them.”

Deschamps said his players were “still hungry” to win another World Cup and not content with just making it to the quarterfinals.

England v France results

England and France have faced each other twice in the World Cup before – England won both group games.

They have played against each other 31 times in all formats and here again England are in the lead. Three Leos got 17 wins, 5 draws and 9 losses.

But in the last quarter century, England have won only one of eight games. The last competitive head-to-head match was a 1-1 draw at Euro 2012 and Joleon Lescott and Samir Nasri were on the score sheet that day.
