Buffalo Chicken Patties, New Frozen Eggs, and More Vegan Food News of the Week

It seems that every week in the world of vegan food news is more exciting than the last and this week is no exception. Fancy vegan chicken? Jack & Annie’s has brought you three new jackfruit-based chicken products. Zero Egg is also working to offer food service providers a simpler solution with its new Scoopable Scramble that will make it much easier to put vegan eggs on menus. And Ben & Jerry’s is finally giving our friends in the UK a taste of dairy-free phish food. Read on for more.

1Jack & Annie’s is growing a vegan jackfruit chicken line

Jack & Annie’s is known for making delicious vegan jackfruit meat and this week the company added three exciting new products to their range: Crispy Jack Patties, Buffalo Jack Patties and Crispy Gluten-Free Jack Tenders.

“Our fans continue to ask for more chicken options, and we’re excited to meet their needs with these three new additions,” said Annie Ryu, founder and CEO of Jack & Annie’s, in a statement. “By using jackfruit as our key ingredient, we can create foods that not only fill you up like meat, but are a good source of fiber and protein, contain less fat and calories than meat products, and are simpler and less processed in comparison to other meat alternatives.”

The new products are available in grocery store freezers nationwide and complement Jack & Annie’s existing jackfruit-based line, which includes vegan chicken wings, meatballs, pulled pork and more.

“Jackfruit has a naturally meaty texture and also absorbs flavors well, allowing for a versatile and delicious flavor experience,” Ryu said.

2Celebrate Oktoberfest with meatless sausages

For more than 200 years, people in Munich have gathered at the annual Oktoberfest for beer, camaraderie and sausages.

This year, the festival has something to offer its vegan guests with the introduction of plant-based options developed during Oktoberfest’s COVID-19-related hiatus.

Fest organizers this year hired chef Sebastian Copien to develop new options, including plant-based veal sausage, created in collaboration with German vegan brand GREENFORCE. Made with pea protein and studded with traditional parsley, the new offering is a nice change from the grilled ox, pork sausages and chicken typically served at Oktoberfest.

Other vegan options at the festival, which includes 14 large-capacity beer tents and a few smaller ones, include potato salad pies; classic bratwurst with sauerkraut; and a goulash with plucked mushrooms.

While the name might suggest you have more time to make travel plans to Munich, Oktoberfest kicked off on September 17th and keeps the vegan bratwurst party going until October 3rd.

3First Frozen Vegan Scrambled Eggs

Zero Egg is a brand from Israel that entered the United States foodservice and manufacturing sector in 2020 with its liquid vegan eggs made from a blend of plant proteins such as chickpea, potato, soy and peas.

This week, Zero Egg announced a new innovation: Scoopable Scramble, a prepared version of its vegan egg that makes it easy for food operators to add a pet-free breakfast option to their menus. According to the company’s CEO, Liron Nimrodi, the new vegan egg format was created to meet the needs of the catering industry in the modern era.

“Our customers are looking for plant-based egg solutions that are easy for them to use, highly nutritious and delicious,” Nimrodi said in a statement. “We have engaged with them from day one, listening to them, hearing about the hardships they are facing including unprecedented labor shortages, supply chain disruptions and inflated costs. We created Zero Egg Scoopable Scramble to make it easier than ever to serve delicious and nutritious plant-based egg dishes and meet their needs and the needs of their guests.”

Currently, Zero Egg — which is sold through DOT Foods — is doing well on the menu at five locations of New York chain The Gray Dog, where it’s served as part of a breakfast burrito. The vegan egg-stuffed burrito, Nimrodi says, is the third-best-selling breakfast item across all The Gray Dog locations, regularly outperforming comparable chicken-egg options.

4Ben & Jerry’s vegan phish food is floating in the pond

Ice cream lovers across the United States have been fortunate to have enjoyed Ben & Jerry’s plethora of vegan offerings for years, but some flavors have yet to reach our friends overseas…for now.

This week Ben & Jerry’s announced the arrival of vegan phish food in Tesco stores across the UK – with more stocks planned for 2023.

First launched in the US in January 2021, the flavor is the vegan remake of one of the ice cream brand’s first and most iconic flavors, created in the 1990s as a tribute to the band Phish. Dairy-free phish food is made with almond milk and features the same iconic marshmallow swirls, fish-shaped chocolates, and caramel ribbons as the original, but with no animal products.

“Our fans have been addicted to phish food for 25 years, and it’s an O-Phish ally that gets the dairy-free bonus it deserves,” said Ben & Jerry’s flavor guru, Gabby Smith, in a statement. “We’re so excited to introduce a tub of dairy-free delights without compromising on the chunks and swirls that phish food is known for, meaning you don’t have to be vegan to enjoy it. ”

But it’s not all vegan ice cream fairies and sunshine in the States, the UK also has a few exclusive flavors we’re keeping an eye on (check out newly launched Chocolatey Love-a-Fair).
