Brussels Airlines flies first flight on sustainable fuel

A Brussels Airlines flight from Brussels to Malaga on New Year’s Eve was the first flight to take off from Brussels Airport with a 38-62% SAF and conventional fuel mix.

Brussels Airport and Brussels Airlines started the new year with firsts in the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The airport can now also provide SAF refueling thanks to NATO’s underground Central European Pipeline Service, which connects France, Germany and the Benelux countries and provides civilian flights as well as NATO’s air fleet.

SAF is created from waste streams and edible oils. The fuel, which has lower greenhouse gas emissions than regular kerosene, is claimed to have the potential to reduce aviation greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%. It is currently used by about forty airlines worldwide.

Air France currently uses a 1% SAF blend on all flights departing from France. British Airways recently stepped up Project Speedbird to produce 102 million liters of SAF per year. Environmental advocates argue that SAF production, which struggles with high costs and legal problems, is not the magic wand of aviation. A Boeing 747 uses about four liters of fuel per second.

Brussels Airlines bought 2 million liters of biokeresene supplied by Finnish oil company Neste. As a mixture prepared at Neste’s blending facility in Ghent, it is loaded into the pipeline and transported to the airport ready-to-use by Brussels Airlines vehicles.

The airline is working and investing in biokeracene production with parent company Lufthansa. Peter Gerber, CEO of Brussels Airlines, said: “The fact that sustainable aviation fuel can now be transported quickly and environmentally friendly from the blending plant to our aircraft is an important step towards increasing the use of such fuels in the near future.

Brussels Airport, which has recently halted its plans for its own SAF blending facility, aims for SAF to account for five percent of total imports by 2026.
