The 64-year-old Brit is arrested for “broadcasting live child sex abuse in the Philippines after befriending poor mothers and offering them cash”.

  • John Crotty, 64, of Cardiff, has been arrested for running a child sex abuse website
  • Police arrested Crotty while searching his rented bungalow in the town of Tangub
  • The investigator alleged that Crotty took advantage of his alleged victims’ poverty by promising their parents large sums of money

This is the dramatic moment a British tourist was arrested for allegedly running a child sex abuse website in the Philippines.

John Crotty, 64, of Cardiff, Wales, was sentenced to nine years in Britain in 2013 but moved to the impoverished Southeast Asian country in February this year shortly after his release from prison.

He allegedly started a website and social media accounts, which he used to disseminate obscene photos and broadcast live shows of underage Filipino girls exposing themselves.

Police arrested Crotty while searching his rented bungalow in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental province, on September 15.

The footage shows staff from the Philippine Immigration Service’s Fugitive Search Unit confronting the bewildered Brit at his shabby home and asking him to collect his travel documents before escorting him to their office.

Ansari Maca-ayan, a regional director of the Bureau of Immigration’s Intelligence Division, said, “The suspect is being charged with arranging and facilitating Filipino children to engage in sexual prostitution online.”

The investigator claimed the suspect took advantage of his alleged victims’ poverty by promising their parents large sums of money to help them abuse their children.

Crotty allegedly befriended women through social media before offering them money to have their children molested while he watched.

The British Embassy said Britain’s National Crime Agency reported Crotty’s arrival in the Philippines on February 6. He lived with his girlfriend in Tangub City but they have since split up.

The tourist is currently being held by immigration officials and has not spoken publicly about his arrest. He is due to be extradited to the UK, where he is on the sex offenders register, to face charges.

Ansari added: “This is a clear warning that our country is not a safe haven for foreign criminals. Philippine law enforcement agencies are always vigilant and monitoring criminals who are here in this country to take advantage of our hospitality.’

Crotty was jailed at Cardiff Crown Court in March 2013 for “arranging child prostitution in the Philippines”.

The then 54-year-old pervert, living in the Rhymney Valley, spoke to Filipino mothers online and asked to see suggestive photos of their daughters.

Chat records obtained by police allegedly showed that Crotty asked the women for pictures of their children in the shower or naked in bed. Some of the mothers had blocked him, calling him “abnormal” and “crazy”, but others, desperate for cash, complied with his twisted requests.

In court, Crotty insisted his innocence, claiming his friends used his computer while he slept. However, the jury learned that despite his alibi, he had actually spent the entire night on his desktop.

He was sentenced to nine years in prison for child prostitution, possession of indecent photographs of children and committing child abuse offences. He was released in 2021.
