Again, Nigerian govt issues travel advice on Northern Cyprus

The Nigerian government has again urged Nigerians to beware of people posing as travel agents.

“The attention of the federal government of Nigeria has been drawn to the clandestine activities of unscrupulous elements posing as agents, leading unsuspecting young Nigerians to believe that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus offers easy access to greener pastures for study and employment opportunities.” State Department spokeswoman Francisca Omayuli said.

Ms Omayuli noted that the activities of these agents have resulted in an “alarming influx” of Nigerians into northern Cyprus and an unprecedented number of stranded young Nigerians.

That Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) warned Nigerian students not to go to Northern Cyprus in August.

said the head of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa Northern Cyprus has not been recognized by the UN and many students had been killed there.

“There were many problems in North Cyprus; we have young people who came to tell us, please tell everyone not to go to North Cyprus anymore.

“We did that a while ago and we were challenged what rights we had to tell people not to go to North Cyprus.

“I’ll say it again; if you have to go to North Cyprus, think twice; No fewer than 20 students have been killed over the years and nothing has happened to the attackers.

The ministry, in its latest advisory, advised Nigerians to be vigilant to guard against these so-called agents in Nigeria or elsewhere who are peddling permits and the existence of unverifiable employment opportunities in northern Cyprus.

“It is advisable that students and their parents/guardians conduct due diligence at any so-called university or college before applying for admission,” Ms. Omayuli added.

She also warned against misleading advertisements for job vacancies in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
